As a consumer, you may be interested when two major companies get into a heated dispute about their patents. Knowing if a company is honest is a key component to purchasing in the market; those that cheat, lie or steal find themselves without a customer base.
The mattress company, Serta, has filed a lawsuit against Casper for stealing its technology, according to a news report. The Sept. 29 report indicated that the company believes that Casper stole its mattress technology, and it claims patent infringement.
Serta has alleged that Casper copied its patented design in its new Wave mattress. In a 40-page lawsuit, Serta documented each similarity, aiming to shut down the up-and-coming mattress company. Serta claims it isn't surprised that the company has used its designs, stating that Casper openly describes disrespecting the current mattress industry.
The new model by Casper, the Wave, was introduced at prices between $1,000 and $2,250. It has alternating levels of firm and soft materials, which are designed to form to a person's body. Serta believes that the layering is too similar to the Channel Cut Technology it uses, which uses divots to provide flexibility and support.
Serta would like to receive monetary reimbursement for the infringement, according to the court order. It also wants to have Casper banned from selling its mattresses moving forward.
If you run a business, you know your patents are one of the most important assets you have. If someone infringes on those patents, you have a right to file a lawsuit and seek reimbursement. With the right documents, you can prove your case.
